The Xtracycle Ethos

The cargo/utility bike is a simple, sustainable approach to transportation—and part of our vision for a better future for all.

Way back in our very first catalog, we wrote, “Riding a bike is about waving to your neighbors, talking to people at crosswalks, enjoying your own power, coasting down the hill with a bit of wind in your hair, paying attention to the cracks in the road, sticking your tongue out to taste the spring rain, always being able to find a parking place, feeling like a kid, enjoying the getting there as much as the being there, the effort as much as the reward.”

We weren’t ruminating on all that good stuff in an attempt to decry folks who like to race ultralight bikes or anything. We believe that there is no Us vs. Them in cycling. What we were getting at was the fact that the cargo and utility cycling lifestyle revels in those aspects of life on a bike, bringing it all to the forefront of the experience.

And this pleasure is the carrot that draws us ever forward, so the work part happens while we’re not quite aware of it. Fun exercise and transportation is just … fun. It turns work into play.

That’s the real magic of Xtracycle. Whether you’re on one of our mechanical or electric cargo bikes, what you’re doing is technically “utility cycling” or “cargo biking,” but it’s really just riding around—having fun and getting stuff done. And whether or not you replace a car, you will discover an endlessly rewarding way to explore your neighborhood, your city, your region, and your world.

Every day, more and more people all over the globe are embracing this simple, sustainable approach to transportation, work, and play. The more, the merrier, we say.

Xtracycle was founded in response to this calling: to reinvent and fully realize the life-enhancing potential of bicycles in our modern world. We believe in harnessing the power of curiosity-driven design to amplify the secret powers of this simple steed (and its riders). Through our commitment to service and the value we place on deep human connection, we work tirelessly to positively shift the course of human transportation toward a more brilliant future.

It’s happening. We’ve seen it every day since 1998. We hope you’ll join us.

As we also wrote in that first catalog, “ride one around for a couple days—take it shopping, put your mom on back—and you’ll see what we mean.”

Our Mission

Xtracycle works to empower people with transformational tools that move the body and spirit.

Our Core Values

1. Be a good butterfly.

If a butterfly can cause a hurricane thousands of miles away, so can you. Make it a good one.

2. Run the edges.

Edgerunners are those courageous people who by strength of will and nobility of spirit make life better for humanity. It’s a way of being. Reimagine the status quo and live for something bigger than yourself.

3. Be ready for anything.

Open minds and hungry hearts—with a willingness to try new things, take risks, and fail forward—prepare us for everyday adventure. Commit to grow, master your uncertainty, sharpen your skills, and boldly forge your future.

4. Be moved.

When we fully engage with the moment, embrace our purpose, and are moved in body and spirit, we generate vicarious joy. This is our invitation to openly share your emotion, inspiration, meaning, and beauty: fuel your fire and lead the way with your light.

5. We ride together.

We share a vision of the bicycle as a powerful change agent—humble and inclusive yet revolutionary—and bikes that haul give people even more utility and personal freedom. That’s the whole point: we edgerunners ride together, and our bikes serve, transport, and transform us all. If the life we live is the legacy we leave, let’s ride!
