About the drive system
A maintenance-free Bosch electric direct-drive motor puts out tons of torque and gives you 50 to 275 percent more power when you need it most. This means that you’ll be able to bike up hills much faster than an elite racer, even carrying heavy loads. The mid-drive motor is incredibly efficient and powerful, so you’ll use much less energy under the same conditions than with any other type of motor.
Bosch’s heads-up digital readout on the Purion display* allows you to select your level of electric assist and always displays your speed, distance traveled, and remaining range. There are four modes of fun—at the push of a button. It’s like a spaceship or something.
- ECO: All-day assistance, sipping from your battery.
- TOUR: Go ahead, get a little rowdy.
- SPORT: It’s officially a race. Or your burden is really heavy.
- TURBO: Flatten hills, fully loaded. This is “beast mode.”
A single Bosch lithium-ion battery typically gives you a range of 20 to 60 miles. The DualBattery is perfect for tour bikers, long-distance commuters, and cargo bikers. The combination of two Bosch batteries delivers up to a massive 1,000 Watt-hours.
How to choose your Bosch motor
Our Bosch electric cargo bikes can be ordered with one of three motors.
The Performance motor
The Performance motor is a wonderful entry level option for those looking at a lower price point. It has a top e-assist speed of 20 mph and is the lowest motor torque offering.
The CX motor
The CX is our standard motor, and is appropriate for the vast majority of cargo bike riders, especially if this will be your first e-assist bike. The CX has a top speed of 20 mph, and has more torque and power for hills, etc., than our Speed motor (see below).
The Speed motor
The Speed motor is best for those urban commuters looking to get somewhere fast. This motor is best for skilled riders. While it is faster than the CX on relatively flat ground, it has somewhat less torque and power, for hill-climbing with large loads.

Efficient & long-lasting
Bosch batteries are an efficient energy provider with staying power—and the most modern e-bike batteries on the market. These lithium-ion PowerPacks demonstrably have maximum energy density with the smallest size and lowest weight available. They combine impressive mileage performance, a long lifetime, and low weight with an ergonomic design and simple handling.
The high-quality lithium-ion batteries are equipped with a Battery Management System, which recognizes potential sources of error and protects the cells from overload. Bosch batteries are designed for lots of trips, miles, and years of service. The intelligent, electronic BMS protects lithium-ion batteries from excessive temperatures, overcharging, and deep discharge. The BMS checks every cell, extending the life of the rechargeable battery. This makes the time from initial use to the need to replace a Bosch battery extremely long.

Simple to Store and Quick to Charge
Batteries are easy to remove and charge at home. The PowerPacks can also be conveniently charged directly on the bike. Modern Bosch lithium-ion batteries do not suffer from memory effect or self-discharge issues. Bosch batteries with lithium-ion cells can be charged quickly irrespective of your charge level at any time. Interruptions of the charging process do not harm the battery. Complete discharge is not required.
A single battery will fully charge on or off your Xtracycle in roughly 3.5 hours—or to 50 percent in roughly 1.5 hours, depending on the charger and PowerPack.
Long periods of non-use
Even after long periods of storage, e.g., over winter, the battery can be used without recharging. This means Bosch rechargeable batteries do not need to be recharged after a long break in use. For longer storage, a charge status of approximately 30 to 60 percent is recommended.
How to choose your Bosch battery
Sorry, the PowerPack 400 is no longer available. All single-battery bikes now come with a PowerPack 500.
Whether visiting friends, enjoying a country bike ride in the fresh air, or doing some errands around town by bike, the PowerPack 400 delivers the energy required. The light lithium-ion battery is easy to install and remove for charging or it can simply be left on the bike for powering up. Its long life, ergonomic design, and ease of handling means the PowerPack 400 provides reliable support that is strong on performance. While a variety of factors contribute to the range of an e-bike battery (like assist mode, road conditions, hills, wind strength, weight being carried on the bike, etc.), the PowerPack 400 has a typical range of 20 – 40 miles.
The Bosch PowerPack 500 is the same size as and only slightly heavier than the PowerPack 400 but extends the range. The lithium-ion battery requires about two hours to charge to 50 percent, and the PowerPack 500 takes approximately 4.5 hours to charge with the Bosch Standard Charger. In favorable conditions, tours of up to 55 miles are possible.
While a variety of factors contribute to the range of an e-bike battery (like assist mode, road conditions, hills, wind strength, weight being carried on the bike, etc.), the PowerPack 500 has a typical range of 25-50 miles.
Bosch’s DualBattery is the perfect solution for tour bikers, long-distance commuters, and cargo bikers. The combination of two Bosch batteries delivers up to 1,000 Watt-hours and can integrate nearly all battery combinations from the manufacturer. The system switches intelligently between the two batteries both during charging and discharging.
While a variety of factors contribute to the range of an e-bike battery (like assist mode, road conditions, hills, wind strength, weight being carried on the bike, etc.), the DualBattery 1000 has a typical range of 50-100 miles.
Bosch battery charge times
All Xtracycle Bosch e-bikes come with a Bosch battery charger. Bikes built with a single battery come with a Compact charger. Bikes built with a dual battery set up come with a Standard charger. It is possible to buy a second or different Bosch charger than what comes included with an Xtracycle Bosch bike.

Power at your finger tips
The Bosch system has two display options to pick from: the simple and effective Purion display or the Bluetooth connected training computer that is the Kiox display.
The Purion display puts all the power of your Bosch system literally at your fingertips. The main Purion screen is conveniently mounted in the center of your handlebars for easy visibility. It has a backlit, non-glare display that shows your speed, support mode, battery range, trip distance, total distance and battery charge status. The control is located on the handlebar near your grip. This allows you to easily switch between support modes or turn lights on and off while riding. The Walk Assist button is located on the top of this controller. The Purion cannot be connected to a training app and cannot be used to charge devices like phones.
The Kiox display brings all the ease of use and access of the Purion but with the added benefit of being a full color, on-board training computer that connects via Bluetooth to the eBike Connect App. The main Kiox screen is conveniently mounted in the center of your handlebars for easy visibility. The full color, back-lit display allows you to safely view various stats while riding, including your speed, support mode, range, trip distance, total distance, cadence, battery percentage charge and heart rate (BPM). The controller is located on your handlebar next to your handlebar grip so you can easily change your assist level, toggle between display screens with your thumb and turn lights on and off. The Kiox display screen can be removed if needed and it can be used to charge devices like phones.
