Crafted of aircraft-grade aluminum, U-Tubes support your passengers’ feet and offer cargo support. They have great weather resistance, letting them shrug off the effects of sun, rain, and muddy boots. They work great for supporting cargo like bags of groceries, bricks, buckets of paint, you name it. They also make bike towing a breeze. U-Tubes can be adjusted to a wide and narrow setting. They are sold in pairs and attach with a bolt that goes through a boss on the Leap.
*** While we are out of stock on Leap U-tubes, and there is no production date planned for these at this time, it is possible to adapt the LT2 U-tubes for the Leap extension frame. Here are the instructions on how to do this: https://www.xtracycle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Leap-LT2-U-Tube-Adaptation.pdf

Question
John –
Hello,
I’m interested in getting a pair of these for my Leap but they are out of stock, I’m worried that they’re to be discontinued like the pannier rails I was going to buy. I understand this pandemic is making things difficult but do you know when are these coming back in stock?
Thank you in advance.

Hey there, John! We do not plan on getting in any more Leap U-tubes but you will be able to modify the LT2 U-tubes when they are back in stock in October to fit your Leap! You can find the document on how to modify the LT2 U-tubes here: https://www.xtracycle.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Leap-LT2-U-Tube-Adaptation.pdf

So I do understand that The Big Dummy is on the no list, however is it on the no list without the retrofit. The description doesn’t seem to be clear to me.

Apologies for the confusion, Althea. We do not recommend our LT2 U-tubes for the Surly Big Dummy. I would recommend reaching out to Surly to see what foot rests they suggest.

Hey there, Henley! Great question. There is no set weight limit on the U-tubes. When properly installed, they are like an extension of the frame and very strong and solid. I have ridden on the rear and stood on the U-tubes and have also loaded up tons of lumber on the U-tubes with no issues. I think the biggest factor to consider is rider comfort in being able to balance the weight that is being carried down low on the U-tubes and keeping the bike balanced (i.e. don’t carry a load of bricks on one side and nothing on the other since it will make the bike very unbalanced). I’m sorry I don’t have a more solid answer for you but I hope this was helpful!
