Julia Butterfly rides an Xtracycle
Julia Butterfly became the most prominent environmental activist of a generation by climbing an ancient Redwood endangered by imminent logging and vowing not to come down until it, and the forest in which it stood, was protected. She stayed for two years. We admire her for sitting for what she believes in.
A couple of years ago she started the Circle of Life Foundation to continue working to protect ancient forests and other endangered environs. Get inspired yourself by reading her biography or checking out one of the two movies made about her.
In 2001 she moved south to Oakland, CA, from her base among the Coastal Redwoods. She says that she was inspired to move to the city so she could live without driving a car. When she found out about the Xtracycle S.U.B., she called it “the answer to [her] prayers,” realizing that it would allow her to shop and salvage lumber for her new office, sans fossil fuel.
