Disc Brake Mount

Disc brake mounts are recommended. 203 mm rotors are strongly recommended for any touring or downhill applications, as normal disc brakes can literally be melted down by long heavy descents.

  • If it is not possible to put a standard disc brake mount on the frame, it is okay to put the disc mount further out. This assumed that a 203 rotor will be used with a 160 adapter, to achieve the correct pad placement.
  • Access to the caliper mounting bolts is important. Do not block access to the bolt heads. Many mechanics will be using Y-wrenches to install and adjust the calipers, so leaving clearance for these tools is important. Additionally, make sure to leave clearance for a caliper on a 203mm rotor, in case the user wishes to install a large rotor.

[edit] Existing mounts

The Free Radical and Big dummy both have mounts for disc brakes. Each one implements this part slightly differently

[edit] Free Radical

The free radical's disc brake mount was added to the design on 2004 (citation needed). It is set further out than a standard IS mount, but will allow the use of a 203mm rotor with a 160mm adapter.

[edit] Big Dummy

The Big Dummy uses a monolothic dropout incorporating a standard IS mount. It is located to use a 160mm rotor.

This design lets the builder use a more normal 160mm rotor. However, heat dissipation problems exist for smaller rotors.
