Mounting xtracycle under chainstays

by ncramer on Sat Nov 17, 2007 6:22 pm

Can one of you engineer types tell me whether I would break myself (or more importantly my bike and FR) trying this setup?

Situation: My current Masi road bike has no chainstay bridge and the chainstay length is just slightly too short so the front of the FR bumps against the angled downtube (we're talking like 1/8th of an inch here).

Is it ok to mount underneath the chainstays and attachment plates?

How it should be:
O Bolt
--D Free radical
--- Attachment Plate
>-- Chainstay
--- Attachment plate
O Nut

How I'm thinking:
O Bolt
--- Attachment Plate
> Chainstay
--- Attachment plate
--D Free radical
O Nut

Super or suicide? Please let me know.

Thank you,
Nate

I wouldn't recommend this setup unless you are very light and don't intend to take any big loads or go offroad… which kind of defeats the whole purpose of the FreeRad. You can find a cheap steel MTB on your local craigslist that would likely be a better candidate… just my 0.02.

Hi

Can't start a new thread so...

I wondered if a jump bike made a good base for the Free Radical? I was thinking this frame might be a good start:

<http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=71379&utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=froogle>

Will it work or are jump bikes not compatible?

Currently (and rock the admin will likely correct me if I'm wrong), Xtracycles are designed to run on 26" wheels (though 26" wheel is a misnomer: see the late Sheldon Brown's Site at http://www.sheldonbrown.com/26/index.html for an explanation) OR a 700c wheel. (the 700c frames are backordered as of March 2, 2008) The difference has to do with where the brake bosses are placed. 28" wheels usually have an final tire diameter of around 29", which would be too big to fit into the xtracycle frame. If you wanted to do this, you'd need to fabricate your own or have a frame builder build a custom xtracycle for you. The advantages of the big air cushioning effect associated with 29" wheels would be nice on an xtracycle, but 29" tires are much harder to come by in many parts of the world, whereas the 26" tire is pretty ubiquitous, which is likely why xtracycle adopted that as their standard size.

As for the "Decathlon (not DecathAlon) Triban"... I found a "Decathlon Triban Trail 7" at http://www.btwincycle.com/EN/triban-trail-7-9658825/ but there's NO indication anywhere of actual wheel size. The closest I could find in the specs was this mention: "Drivetrain: SRAM 24-speed. ESP comp twist grip shifters. Aluminium cranks. Suntour XCC steel chainring. SRAM MMRD rear derailleur and Shimano SH051 front derailleur. 42x11 gearing, i.e. 34kmph at 70 revolutions per minute (28")." A 40 x 11 yields (on a 700 x 44c (44-622) 34kph at 70rpm, so I guess they're putting a 700c wheel on the bike. You MIGHT be able to squeeze this wheel/tire combo into a xtracycle frame, but I would check with the folks at xtracycle (phone calls are good) to see what the biggest tire/wheel combo they've seen squeezed in. I think there are some photos and text in the forums somewhere of some mods that have been done to squeeze in big tires: I think Kipchoge did it to a cruiser frame at one point.

Good luck!

By the bye, I discovered that the bolt that's used on the Townie 3's internal hub is too short for the xtracycle. Following after the folks at pleasantrevolution.net, I did indeed use a clamp to squish (!) the xtracycle, at which point things were muy bueno.

This is, however, pretty hardcore, so I wanted to mention that one has to do something which is mildly hardcore to get the xtracycle to play nice with the Townie 3.

hello!! just 2 questions...is the freeradical compatible with a 26in Redline monocog and its horizontal dropouts? oh and is it possible to mount a deraillure hanger on the rear axle area with the freeradical is installed? some posibilities there for a conversion to 4 speed. thanks for any reply!!!

Horizontal dropouts aren't a problem: your main problem may be the OLD (over locknut dimension). I went poking around the Redline website looking for specs on the 26" Monocog and according to Redline, the spacing on the 29er is 135... I would assume it's the same on the 26", but you would need to check.

As for the derailer, there's a hanger on the Freerad frame, so you'll just need a derailer. If you're building a 4 speed... and I assume you're going to use a dingle cog and use the derailer as a chain tensioner? Or maybe if you have the two gears correct you're planning on manually switching the chain? Just curious.. I don't know of anyone who runs this setup, but then of course I only know a fraction of the xtracyclists out there.

Hi, I have a few questions. Is the 700c size xtracycle available for shipment?
My O.L.D. as I understand it, the outer width of the frame at the wheel is 144mm.

Also can this accommodate a wheel of width 145 mm axle width? This is a Crystalyte electric wheel that I would like to use.
Thank you,
Will

Your best bet is to call Xtracycle direct and find out whether they have stock of the 700C frames. As for the 145mm.. is that the O.L.D? You may be able to stretch your xtracycle frame some: whether you can do it 10mm is a question better answered by the folks at Xtracycle. Someone on the forums may have done it, but a LOT of the traffic is happening over at the Roots Radicals Yahoo group, as well as on bikeforums.net.

Hi.

I was wondering about the compatibility of the 700cc Xtracycle rack with my 2006 Lemond Alpe D'Huez. Did a forum search and could not find anything.

Thanks for your time!

I've ordered a 26" Xtracycle kit with the intention of putting it on an early 90s Kona Lava Dome. Anything in particular I should watch out for? This is an all-steel bike, but after reading the Xtracycle instructions I'm a bit concerned since it was produced prior to 1997. Hopefully it's no worries.

If the O.L.D is 135mm and the frame's not a weird shape, it'll probably fit. If the OLD is bigger (not likely) you'll have to stretch the frame. Smaller and you'll need spacers... get in there and measure the O.L.D!
