Wheels

by admin on Sat Dec 28, 2002 9:33 am

The FreeRadical 26 is designed to work with 26” wheels. This category includes the vast majority of mountain bikes, most cruisers, and many hybrid bikes. The FreeRadical 700c is compatible with most road bike wheels and tires up to 700c x 35 (and some 700c x 38 tires). If you're not sure whether your wheels will fit or if they're not up to the Sport Utility Bicycle Lifestlye, give us a call and we'll be happy to discuss your specific situation.

29" wheels?

by bradmn on Thu Aug 10, 2006 7:30 am

Can it fit my 29" wheel single speed?
Or is there a modification that can be made?
Is there one in the works?

It won't fit a 29er unless you've got skinny tires on it (by MTB standards). Like 1.25s. I'm really liking the feel of 26" wheels with superfat tires on a frame designed for 29" wheels though. Disc brakes let you change wheel sizes easily.

29"

Putting 26" wheels on a bike designed for 29" would defeat the purpose?

Anyone else tried it?

Is there one in the works from Extracycle being made in the future?

Several people have put 26" wheels on niner-framed Xtracycles. People like 'em. It lightens the steering feel, lowers the bottom bracket to get a foot down easy, and lets you run superfat tires to suspend the load, too. I'm fixing to write more about this soon -- will probably blog it with pictures.

So, I see they have a 700c or 29" version, the question is will that work with a 29" mountain bike with standard mountain bike tires?

Unfortunately, not really. There's not enough room for a real mtb tire. Probably about 1.5" is as much clearance as you could get with such a rim.

Hookworms and Large Marge Rims

by kmichaeljohn on Mon Apr 09, 2007 12:50 pm

hey gang...I'm lookin' to build a long tail here in NYC and I wanted to outfit it with some fatty tires on the front and back. Will the 26 chassis fit a pair of 2.5 Hookworms on Surly's Large Marge rims? I want to make sure it will fly before I get the parts. If not, can can anyone suggest a good urban alternative (tire/rim)? Looking to haul some heavy loads, Costco, etc...

We had lovely success with the project. Check it out here: http://pleasantrevolution.net/?p=110

One of the best-riding longbikes of all time, from our point of view. We did lose some gears, but the ride makes is worth it.

Cool. Real cool. So, Rock, what shifter/derailleur combo did you end up using? I might give this a shot. Any more info would be killer!

I have 650c tires. I'm encouraged by the words "up to," but haven't read anything confirming that it is compatible. Does anyone know?

Thanks

So, You would get the same chain clearance with a hub
gear like a Nexus or Rohloff?

todd,

Have you written this up? I can't seem to find it on your site. I am interested in this concept.

Thanks,

650B Wheels

by fpatek on Sat Jun 16, 2007 9:38 pm

Can anyone verify if either the 26" or 700c Free Radical kit work with 650B wheels, specifically on a Rivendell Bleriot w/ 32mm tires? Thanks in advance.
