The O.L.D. (the distance between the outer faces of the outer lock-nuts) must be between 128 and 135mm. The standard distance for MTB wheels has been 135mm since 1997. It will generally work with a 128mm O.L.D., as well, with the use of the supplied Spacer Washers.
Narrower frames will need to be spread for a good fit. (Single-speed cruisers will almost always need to be spread.) Most shops have a frame spreading capability because many people want to put newer (wider) drivetrains on older bikes. Older wheels can be fitted with a longer axle at slight expense by most bike shops. See The FreeRadical Book, pages 6–7, for additional details.
