Dreams

We dream of more bikes and fewer cars, of more green spaces and fewer parking places, of more paths and less pavement, of a world without need for oxygen bars. We dream of smokestackless factories, of broken-down dams and free-flowing rivers, of meaningful jobs creating meaningful products and services for a new society that has outgrown consumerism. We dream of a people motivated by beauty.

We are social and environmental mechanics. Business is our tool. Some might ask, "If you're such do-gooders, why aren't you non-profit?" Because the enterprises that grow the fastest and have the most potential to change the world are for-profit. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these enterprises do more messing up than fixing. We aim to meld the altruism of the charitable enterprise with the efficiency and growth potential of a market-driven business to create a self-sustaining fountain of green, clean, fun, inspirational, equitable, radical beauty.

We are welders and teachers. We build sport-utility bikes to sell to people who can afford them. We teach those who can't how to build their own. Or better yet, we teach them how to teach their communities how to build their own. The Xtracycle SUB enables a new kind of bicycle-based economy, and we empower people to include themselves in this economy by making businesses building and using SUBs. You should see this economy: it is human powered and the people are smiling; it is beautiful.

In Pursuit of the Bicycle Lifestyle

When the two of us started this company eight years ago, we didn't think about bicycling as a lifestyle. Biking was just a cheap, fun, appropriate way to get around. But we knew you could ride more if you could easily carry a load, and we knew the world would be a saner, cleaner, cooler place if more people could ride more often. So we designed a bike to carry your stuff.

It worked.

We proudly called it "the bike that hauls," to advertise that you could pile it up with groceries or gear and still beat traffic. And yet, both "amazing load capacity" and "nimble handling"—while true—failed to get at the essence of how the "bike that hauls" changed our own lives, and how it could change yours.
And that's why we probably wouldn't have bought one ourselves; we didn't yet understand the difference between the bicycle as tool and the bicycle as enricher of days. It's the deep essence that words and pictures don't easily capture; like falling in love, you know it when you feel it. And in this case, you only feel it when you ride it—for a few hours or months or just one trip to the store—and realize you have the ability to freely travel anywhere, carrying anything or anyone, and it's not just practical, it's magical.

It's not for everyone, but it might be for you.

We designed the Xtracycle Sport Utility Bicycle system for people like us. We like being outside and feeling strong. We care about the planet. We believe in being part of the solution and know that sometimes we aren't even close. We abuse products. We hate trying to find a parking place on Friday night. We kayak and surf. We love music. We like to push ourselves. We also like slippers and tea. We love free stuff. We love freedom and wind in the face. We love riding bikes. Sometimes we're too tired to ride. Sometimes we just can't get up the gumption. We love good food with friends. We have kids in our lives, and moms. We have friends who need rides. We always want to laugh more and be happy.
