Delivering healthy, fresh foods for West Oakland residents by cargo bicycle!

Numerous sponsorship applicants apply each quarter, but People's Grocery stood out among the applicant pool for their selfless efforts at improving the health and well being of West Oakland residents. After a productive meeting with Max Cadji, Xtracycle and People's Grocery worked out a plan to get more PG workers out of their trucks and onto our longtail utility bikes.

In a recent newsletter to their supporters, Max writes:

Urban Agriculture out of the truck and onto the cargo bike!

80% of the world’s population now lives in cities. Urban and peri-urban agriculture is emerging as a more viable solution to meet the fresh produce needs of communities living in urban centers. Whether on abandoned city blocks, rooftops, or aquaponics systems; urban agriculture is a hot potato.

People’s Grocery works to not only provide access to fresh foods to the West Oakland Community, but to engage people in the process of growing food and being active in green spaces. To expand this work we have partnered with Oakland based company, XTRACYCLE, to bring cargo bikes to the People’s Grocery Urban Ag Program. We are going to be getting our West Oakland youth staff, urban Ag interns, and urban Ag staff out off the truck and onto the cargo bike.

Imagine the possibilities! We will be transporting our locally harvested produce from our 3 gardens and greenhouse via Xtracycles, as well as our plant starts, tools, and raw compost for our worm bins. With 1 out of 3 children and 57% (66% for African Americans and 71% for Latinos) of adults in California suffering from obesity, cargo bikes in West Oakland will not only provide a more eco-friendly and economical way to grow in the city, but will also provide a great venue for exercise. Look out for some fresh cargo bikes on your city block.
